2007

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. No, this is not a Tale of Two Cities….it is my 2007.  It was a year filled with change and with the changes came both excitement and heartache.

New Attitude – I attended the New Attitude (Na) conference and was immersed in awesome worship and messages from great speakers such as Piper, Harris, Mahaney, Dever, etc. I came away refreshed and a renewed understanding of God’s grace. I knew that love of Christ is something I can never earn. But to realize that it is also something that I can never pay back because it is by the grace of God that allows me to even obey and do the good things in my life, brings me to a new level of gratefulness of the gospel.

New Home – So I finally cut my 1.5 hr commute down to 10 minutes after 3 yrs and moved to north Jersey. To leave for the first time ever the familiarity of central Jersey and family/friends so that I can live alone for the first time in unfamiliar territory was definitely a heart struggle. But learning to let go and cling to Him alone was well worth it. Hey, I can sleep until 8am now.

New Church? – With the changes at church and changes in my personal life, it was a time of heart searching of what do I want in a church. But RCCC is the only church I’ve ever known. It is where I came to know Christ, where my faith was nourished and developed, where I learned to live in the community of the Body. I may not know what I want in a church yet, but I do know I will always journey life with my friends wherever we may worship.

New Friends – Who knew my love for dancing would bring such awesome new friends into my life this year. What a joy it is to meet friends who are interested in getting to know Christ. And, of course, it’s always a joy when you cross paths with that special new friend who you feel like you’ve known for years. Looking forward to truly knowing my sister, Wen, as a friend for years to come.

Farewells – As friends come and go 2007 was also one marked with heart aching farewells. Farewell to a family we all love and admire…and wish we can follow to VA. Farewell to a boy who brought laughter and smiles to all who knew him. Farewell to a courageous college friend, who although served in the military, fought his best fight against cancer. I learned the hard way in 2007 to cherish my family/friends, to cherish each moment I have with them, and to cherish the gospel enough to be bold for Him so I will have no regrets.

And farewell 2007.  May 2008 bring more new and exciting things as we continue to cherish what we already have. Happy 2008 peeps!

OK, here are some pics of my business trip to Sydney and family re-union in Shanghai.

Actually, my meeting was at Manly Beach. The tall white building behind the trees is where I stayed.

Working hard on my balcony....or maybe hardly working. Hey, who can blame me....check out the awesome view of the surfers.

View of the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge from the Botannical Gardens. And view from atop the Harbour Bridge. I totally recommend this to anyone visiting Sydney.

The Three Sisters of the Blue Mountains.  The air is so blue because of the oils in the air from all the eucalyptus trees.

Shanghai - Day and night

Suzhou - North Tower and Old City

Wuxi - Taihu and Liyuan Garden

Hangzhou - Old City and West Lake

Shaken, not stirred

Shaken. Although not shaken to the core, but still shaken. They say change isn’t necessarily bad. Change can be a catalyst to something better. But with change, also comes questions - lots of questions and answers to be sought after.  What if I don’t agree with the answers? Do I leave the place I’ve called “home” for oh so long? My heart aches even at the thought of it.

Regardless, I know that "in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."

What adults really do when we're not around

So on Christmas Eve, my family was invited over to the Doong household for dinner. Since I met my parents there, I jetted after dinner when the other young adults left. I went on my merry way to chill at the Wood with my peers. Come 12:30am, I rush home to my parents cuz I don't want them to think I'm a party animal nor have them wait up for me. But when I walk in the door at 1:00am, my mom says to me, "Oh good, we made it home before you. We just got home because after you guys left, we started dancing. We were having such a good time that I had to remind Daddy that we should get home before our daughter does."

What?! Since when do my parents stay out late dancing?

Well....HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Merhba (Hello) from Malta

So I've been kinda sad that I used up all my vacation days for East Asia. Not that I'm complaining cuz I had a wonderful time seeing God work there and touch the lives of those kids and change my view of that country. But since I love to travel, I wanted a real vacation where I can go somewhere, relax, and do some exploring. God is always faithful and good. Went on a weeklong business trip to the island country of Malta last week and had the opportunity to stay for an extra weekend to do a bit of exploring.

Situated a bit south of Sicily in the Mediterranean, it's been a well sought after land by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, and finally the British. Therefore, most cities on this island had to well fortify itself.

Most houses are made of limestone, which is a natural resource, and harbors are often filled with "luzzis" (bright colorful fishing boats). And I got to see a yacht race.

The Knights of the Order reigned in Malta for a long time caring and defending it's citizens. For a special conference dinner, the original hospital was turned into a dinning hall for us.

I learned that apostle Paul was shipwrecked on this island on his way to Rome. (Acts  28) So I visited the church that was built atop the catacombs where Paul refuged.

The "Silent City" of Mdina easily transports one into ancient times with it's high walls and lack of motor vehicle traffic.

The other added perk of business travel....the beautiful hotels you get to stay in.

Glimpses of God's heart for East Asia

As promised, here are a few pics of our trip to East Asia. It was awesome to see God bring people from all over the world (Australia, HK, Canada, & USA) to bring the Good News to these kids. And never have I been more appreciative of my cultural heritage. God has definitely changed my heart for this country and the people of this country.

The team prior to boarding the bus to the town we’d call home for 2 weeks.

Our extended team members and new best friends from Maryland.

My teaching team and Thailand class. Go Thailand!!

View of the schoolyard with student dorms in the left background. The building on the right provided us daily exercise as we climbed to the assembly hall on the 6th floor 2-3 times daily.

Typical dorm accommodations and the squat toilet.

Our luxurious accommodations. Praise God for western toilets!

No complaints about the food!

And some of our favorite transportation modes: the tuk tuk (or motorbike) and overcrowded hotel elevators (think our record was 15 pple).

I have truly seen that God’s love reaches from the heavens to the oceans and from the west to the east. May His name be praised from every cornfield and mountaintop!

Wanna see or hear more about the trip? Come to our …

East Asia Teahouse

Thanks for all your prayers!
